PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing indole-3-acetic acids, etc., in a high yield by which the deposition of solids can be suppressed even under mold conditions of a relatively low pressure to keep the reactional mixture at a low viscosity; the reaction can be made to smoothly proceed and industrialization can be performed with a simple apparatus. ;SOLUTION: The dehydrating condensation is carried out in the presence of a water-insoluble inert organic solvent having ≥200°C boiling point such as light oil in the method for producing indole-3-acetic acids by conducing the dehydrating condensation of indoles with glycolic acid in the presence of an alkali. When the dehydrating condensation is performed under atmospheric pressure, can aqueous layer 5 and an oily layer 4 composed of the indoles and inert organic solvent are separated from a distillate to carry out the dehydrating condensation while refluxing the oily layer to a reactor.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1998,JPO
