PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect the nature of a deposit by measuring the arrival time of the scattered signal based on the correlation between the scattered signal generated when an acoustic signal collides with an underwater deposit and the acoustic signal, and detecting the position of the deposit. ;SOLUTION: The oscillator 12 of a sonar 10 generates an acoustic signal 14 and transmits itto a deposit 16, and a receiver array 18 receives the acoustic signal scattered by the deposit 16. The oscillator 12 and receiver array 18 are fitted to a support 20 mounted on the sea bottom deposit 16, for example.
