PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for deciding a sawing pattern in a lumbering device which is of a simple construction and is capable of deciding the desired sawing pattern with a high yield under control, and a device for deciding the sawing pattern. ;SOLUTION: The outer diameter of a log is measured (S1) at spots A-E in the axial direction, then maximum inscribed circle data is sought (S2) at each of measuring spots A-E based on measured outer diameter data, and maximum inscribed right circular cylinder data is sought (S3) based on the maximum inscribed circle data and a sawing pattern in the X axial direction is decided based on the smallest maximum inscribed circle data of the maximum inscribed circle data. Further, the sawing pattern in the Y axial direction is decided based on the maximum inscribed right circular cylinder data and the sawing pattern in the X axial direction and the sawing pattern in the Y axial direction are combined to obtain a specified sawing pattern.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1998,JPO
