PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method which improves the efficiency of methane fermentation, executes the non-pollution treatment of the carbon monoxide contained in the waste gases from a petroleum producing bacterium culture tank and recycles the carbon monoxide as a substrate for methane fermentation by combining a methane fermentation treatment and petroleum producing bacterium culture and allowing methane forming bacteria and the petroleum producing bacteria to coexist. ;SOLUTION: A gas holder 4, a petroleum producing bacterium culture tank 5, a means 6 for supplying hydrogen and carbon dioxide, a means 7 for supplying the petroleum producing bacteria and a means 8 for converting the carbon monoxide to sodium formate are combined with the methane fermentation 1. Part of the substrate is converted to the methane by the methane fermentation tank 1 and the petroleum producing bacteria proliferated in the petroleum producing bacterium culture tank are supplied to the methane fermentation tank 1 to improve the efficiency of the fermentation. In addition, the waste gases in which the hazardous carbon monoxide is included from the petroleum producing bacterium culture tank is converted to the sodium formate by the means 8 for converting the carbon monoxide to the sodium formate.
