PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hydrogenation refining catalyst with which decomposition of a hetero compd. in a heavy oil can be accelerated and hydrogenation refining can be effectively carried out by using the catalyst as a prestage catalyst for a hydrogenation catalyst to remove metals and/or hydrogenation desulfurizing catalyst, and to provide a hydrogenation refining method using this catalyst. ;SOLUTION: This catalyst is produced by depositing 0.1 to 10wt.% potassium and at least one kind of active metal selected from group VI elements or VIII element on a porous inorg. carrier. When a heavy oil is treated by hydrogenation, the catalyst is used in the upstream side of at least one catalyst selected from a hydrogenation catalyst to remove metals and a hydrogenation desulfurizing catalyst.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1998,JPO
