PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an inorg. fiber for a fiber reinforced composite material to obtain a fiber reinforced composite material excellent in high temp. oxidation resistance by forming a coating film having a lubricating area and an area which gives a specified fused oxide on the surface of the inorg. fiber. ;SOLUTION: A coating layer containing lubricating area containing carbon and/or boron nitride as the main component and an area which gives an oxide fused material to produce an oxide fused material (e.g. B2O3-SiO2 oxide fused material) under conditions for oxidation of the lubricating area is formed by chemical vapor deposition method of the like on the surface of an inorg. fiber (e.g. silicon nitride fiber). The thickness of the coating layer is preferably 1nm to 10μm. The lubricating area is preferably formed between the inorg. fiber and the area where an oxide fused material is formed, or the area which gives an oxide defused material is preferably formed between the lubricating area and the inorg. fiber. Then the inorg. fiber coated with the layer is incorporated into a ceramic-contg. matrix (e.g. silicon nitride ceramic matrix) to obtain a fiber reinforced composite material.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1998,JPO
