PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce generation of a surface flaw by not cooling a tip part of an austenitic stainless steel strip but cooling from its halfway so as to prevent coiling slip due to coiling tightening. ;SOLUTION: When hot rolling an austenitic stainless steel strip, a detector 3 arranged at the outlet of a final stand detects that the tip part of the strip 1 passes a final stand 2 of a finish rolling mill, the strip is cooled with a coolant table while tracking. In this case, as a water spray device of the coolant table for a prescribed length within about 30m from the tip part is stopped, the strip is passed without forced cooling but with air cooling. As passing a prescribed length set beforehand, cooling is started. A pinch roll gap, when a tip part of the non-cooling strip 1 passes a pinch roll 4, is set by a plate thickness decided by reduction at the final stand 2 of the strip 1 beforehand, a thickness 4 is detected by a thickness meter 5 after the tip of the strip 1 passes the final stand 2, a deviation from a set value of plate thickness is corrected.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1998,JPO
