PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To achieve a long-lasting adhesion capable of bearing a high mechanical load without causing a corrosion problem in bonding a vulcanizable polymer to a metallic reinforcing carrier by using an adhesive substance having two functional groups capable of bonding to the polymer and to the carrier. SOLUTION: An adhesive substance used is represented by the formula: X-Rn -Ari -Rm -Y [wherein X is SH, SiCl3 , Si(OR1 )3 , or COOH; R1 is alkyl; when R is CH2 or CF2 , then 0=n and m=12; when R is CH2 CONHCH2 , etc., then 0=n and m=4; Ar is a benzene, phenylene, thiophene, pyrrol, or furan group; 0=i=6; and Y is an unsatd. hydrocarbon group, esp. styrene, isoprene, etc.]. X strongly bonds to a metal or metal oxide, and Y forms a conjugate bond with a vulcanizable polymer.
