PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To stably produce a polycrystal type cubic boron nitride having high strength and high toughness in large amounts. ;SOLUTION: This method for producing a polycrystal type cubic boron nitride comprises arranging a cylindrical body 1 through gaskets 11 and 12 between a pair of anvil bodies 2 to form a central space part and successively installing an electrode plate 6, a pressure increasing plate 5 and a metal plate 3 on anvil body side of the central space part and installing a pressure medium 7 on the cylindrical body side to form a reaction chamber and charging a graphite cylinder 8 in which cBN raw material 10 is packed into a reaction chamber of a high temperature and high pressure-generating apparatus and retaining the raw material under thermodynamically stable conditions of cBN. In this case, a ratio (P1/P) of power (P1) expressed by product of anvil top area and generated pressure to power (P) used is kept to ≤0.40 under ≥7GPa pressure.
