PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To attain quick dictionary retrieval without generating back track due to matching processing by providing the device with a unit part connecting plural pointer units capable of storing painter strings corresponding to the addresses of all character codes, retrieving a pointer corresponding to an input character string from the pointer units and converting the retrieved pointer into the address of an entry word. SOLUTION: The retrieving device is provided with a dictionary part 101 for storing word information corresponding to the addresses of entry words and the unit part 102 to which pointer units capable of storing pointer strings corresponding to the addresses of all character codes constituting entry words are connected in accordance with the character string of the entry word. An input part 103 instructs the input of a character string or the like to be an entry word or the retrieval of a dictionary. An entry word retrieving part 104 converts a pointer corresponding to an inputted character string into the address of an entry word by successively retrieving respective pointer units in the unit part 102. Consequently the entry word of a dictionary is retrieved without executing matching and dictionary retrieving time is sharply shortened.
