PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a continuous ecological system at the waterside of river in which a space is created to allow fishes, amphibians and reptiles to live continuously and further to allow trees and plants and roots thereof, which become food for these living things, to penetrate into the space, in a bank protection structure formed by a cage mat method. SOLUTION: In the bank protection structure A divided into a plurality of sections, at least in a portion of the structure A, a cage mat 5 and a block 31 for habitat of fishes are disposed adjacent to each other and the mat 5 has a construction in which stones are filled into a box body formed from a metal screen and a living space 33 for living things is provided in the block 31. And an opening and through hole are provided in walls forming the space 33 to cause the space 33 to communicate with the outside.
