PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new manganese oxide-based material having perovskite- type structure, exhibiting greatly high negative magnetic resistance in a low magnetic field, thus applicable as a magnetoresistive element. ;SOLUTION: Nd, Sm, Sr and Mn, each in the form of oxide or compound convertible into the corresponding oxide on heating, are mixed together so as to result in the atom ratios (Nd+Sm)/Mn and Sr/Mn of (1:2), respectively, and the mixture is then sintered. Thereafter, the resultant sintered compact is subjected to crystal growth from a melted state by floating zone method, thus obtaining the objective non-grain boundary-type manganese oxide-based crystal form having perovskite-type structure and expressed by the formula, (Nd1-xSmx)0.5Sr0.5MnO3 ((x) is 0.25-0.95).;COPYRIGHT: (C)1997,JPO
