PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To alter a flow of inflated gas to an air bag without need changing the constitution of an inflator. ;SOLUTION: A relief chamber 216 is installed in and around an inflator 214. Inflated gas discharged out of this inflator 214 first flows into the relief chamber 216, then it is emitted up to an air bag 242 via an outlet orifice 236. A maximum gas mass flow rate in an outlet area of the relief chamber is less than about 300% of a mean gas mass flow rate in the outlet area of the relief chamber, an overall mass flow flowing via the outlet area of the relief chamber at an interval ranging from the outset the inflator emits the gas to the first 10 milliseconds is made so as to be 80% at most of the overall mass flow running via the outlet area of the inflator.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1997,JPO
