PURPOSE: To improve the precision of the smoothing of a contourdirectional pattern extracted from a skin pattern image of a fingerprint, etc. ;CONSTITUTION: A contour-direction updating means 16 updates a variable pattern, calculated by using a contour-directional initial pattern extracted from the skin pattern image and a reliability pattern by its direction extraction, so that the energy function of the variable pattern becomes minimum, and the variable pattern obtained by the update is used as a contour-directional pattern after the smoothing.
