PURPOSE:To make it possible to display a high quality television(TV) signal and a standard TV signal on the same display by controlling a selector, a by-pass existence selecting means and an IDTV processor based upon an output from a high quality TV signal detecting circuit and an output from a wide signal detecting circuit. CONSTITUTION:The scanning speed and the number of scanning lines of an MUSE signal are converted by a wide converter 103 as a standard TV signal having the size almost equal to that of a high quality TV signal in both vertical and horizontal display ranges. An IDTV processor 105 successively converts input signals from the wide converter 103 to scanning signals and outputs the converted signals. Thereby, signals corresponding to approximately the same contents as one scanning line of the high quality TV signal are outputted in both the horizontal and vertical directions. Thereby, any inputted TV signal, i.e., a high quality TV signal or a standard TV signal, can be displayed on the screen of the common display 108 adopting the sequential scanning system based upon a wide aspect ratio.
