PURPOSE:To form a catalyst for petroleum refining by depositing an oxide of the group VI metal in the periodic table and an oxide of the group VIII metal on the carrier consisting of gamma-alumina and the pentasil type zeolite containing SiO2 and Al2O3. CONSTITUTION:Alumina hydrate gel, together with pentasil type zeolite added thereto, is heated and mixed in a kneader to prepare a paste which, after formation, is baked at a temperature of 400-600 deg.C to make a catalyst carrier consisting of 80-20wt.% of gamma-alumina and 20-80wt.% of pentasil type zeolite wherein the molar ratio of SiO2 to Al2O3 is 25-100 and the acid concentration is 0.35-1.25mmol/g. 10-20wt.% of an oxide of the group VI metal in the periodic table and 3-10wt.% of an oxide of the group metal VIII are deposited on this carrier, thereby producing a catalyst having an average pore diameter of 120-220Angstrom for hydrogenation of a circulation solvent for coal liquefaction.
