PURPOSE: To obtain a benzocyclobutene resin film which is excellent in flexibility, film strength, and crack resistance and has good chemical stability by polymerizing bisbenzocyclobutene monomer in the presence of an unsaturated compound which is more active as dienophile than the monomer. ;CONSTITUTION: Bisbenzocyclobutene monomer is polymerized in the presence of an unsaturated compound which is more active as dienophile than the monomer (e.g. maleic anhydride) thereby to form a film. The unsaturated compound is added preferably in an amount of 0.001-0.2mol per mol of the monomer. It is preferable that this process include the step of irradiating the benzocyclobutene resin precursor mixture with ultraviolet light in a mixed gas atmosphere consisting of nitrogen and oxygen. The resin film thus obtained is excellent in flexibility and film strength and also has good chemical stability.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1993,JPO&Japio
