PURPOSE: To shorten the time to be taken for engraving without damaging quality by a method wherein engraving is performed in a scanning manner by motions of an engraving needle and a plate to be engraved, and engraving of two parts or more whose borderline in the scanning direction is apparent is performed at every part by shifting engraving method. ;CONSTITUTION: The engraving machine for engraving face photograph on a card 2 comprises an engraving stand 1 which reciprocates crosswise for a fixed distance in the horizontal direction. Engraving is performed in a scanning manner by motions of the engraving stand 1 and an engraving end 3 to be driven by an engraving needle drive device 4. In engraving by this engraving machine, engraving method is shifted from line engraving to dot engraving (or vice versa) at a borderline (a) at every 1 horizontal scanning. Generation and control of a switching signal are made based on an output of a photo detector 6 provided on an engraving partitioning plate 5 through a switch 7. For the engraving partitioning plate 5, a transparent material whose half part is made to be opaque is used, which is reciprocated crosswise together with the engraving stand 1.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1993,JPO&Japio
