PURPOSE:To simplify a processing method and to increase processing speed by changing the recording forms of plural tracks to record the data to a recording medium in accordance with the set reading direction of the recorded data and deciding the data reading direction in a read state after deciding the difference of recording forms. CONSTITUTION:When 8 parallel tracks are set to a recording medium 10, the data are recorded on both tracks, i.e., a 1st track T1 and an 8th track T8 with the recording density of the T8 set higher than the T1, for example. The difference of recording density between both tracks is decided in a record state, and the prescribed number of bits, for example, of both tacks T1 and T8 are counted by the counters 14 and 15. Thus track T8 having the higher recording density is counted up faster than the track T1 having the lower recording density. Thus the track T8 having higher recording density can be instantaneously decided. Based on the deciding result, the data reading direction can be detected normally and reversely.
