PURPOSE: To obtain the subject latex having superior phase miscibility and useful as emulsion paints by polymerizing a specified latex based on (meth) acrylic acid ester under specified conditions. ;CONSTITUTION: A latex based on one or more kinds selected from the groups consisting of (meth)acrylic acid esters of 1-14C alcohol, vinyl esters of 1-14C satd. aliphat. carboxylic acids, olefins, vinyl arom. compounds, halogenated vinyl and/or vinyl ethers is polymerized by adding an initiator that is decomposed into free radicals having a half-life of 48 hours at a temp. of the latex at the time of addition of hydrogen peroxide. The mixture is heated to a temp. at which the initiator is decomposed into free radicals having a half-life of 48 hours. The latex polymer is grafted after addition of a grafting monomer phase contg. monomers whose homopolymer has Tg of 20°C, to obtain an objective latex.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1994,JPO
