PATTERN DICTIONARY COMPARING METHOD

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To decrease the comparison processing quantity of character feature quantities, and to securely obtain a correct answer, by performing efficient classification as a prestage by using a longitudinal/lateral ratio, an area ratio, and an upper blank ratio as character external shape features, and then comparing the character feature quantities. ;SOLUTION: A feature extraction part 6 extracts feature quantities from a normalized character. In a pattern dictionary memory 8, standard longitudinal/ lateral ratios, area ratios, and upper blank ratios of respective characters, and permissible ranges of those ratios and character feature quantities are registered. A pattern dictionary comparison part 7 compares the longitudinal/ lateral ratio, area ratio, and upper blank ratio of a character to be recognized with those in the dictionary and compares character feature quantities on condition that the ratios are within the allowable ranges.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1997,JPO
