The processes of obtaining stably transformed highly productive wheat and the system of wheat transformation using Agrobacterium are revealed. The present invention provides transformation methods and various explants, such as freshly isolated or pre-cultured immature embryos, germ callus and suspension cells. Methods for isolating transgenic plants after transformation for a short period of time are also disclosed, provided the explants are regenerated during transformation. Thus, the frequency of somaclonal changes associated with a long period of in vitro cultivation is significantly reduced. The frequency of transformation using this system is comparable or exceeds published methods using other systems, such as microcarrier bombardment.
