Manufacture of superconducting wire, sheet or other shaped articles containing whiskers grown from high-temperature superconducting ceramics in their best superconducting crystal direction

Method of manufacturing superconductive filaments, sheets or other mouldings so that their superconductive parts originate from whiskers which are obtained from high-temperature superconductive ceramics in their most superconductive crystal directions. The matrix which encloses and protects the whiskers is of metal which is a good conductor, for example silver, or thermal plastic filled with a metal which is a good conductor or with carbon. Whiskers are packed in a pipe made of the matrix material, between two pipes or two sheets and the unit so obtained is processed to produce the final shape by extrusion, drawing (pultrusion), rolling or by some other type of processing. For plastic the processing can also be carried out by injection moulding. In addition if required the plastic can be cross-linked after processing to thermoset.
