A buckle for safety belts comprising a release button (14) for a fastener, which is mounted on a frame (10) and is slidable between one locked position and one released position and a compensator mass that forms an arm of a lever(16) pivotally mounted on a frame, this characterized in that the release button has two joints (14a, 14b) which are separated in the direction of the slidable movement of the release button in that the lever (16) has a first lever arm (16c) of which one free end in the neutral position of the lever (16) is opposite to the first joint (14a) of the release button (14) to a certain distance of the same, a second lever arm (16d) of which one free end in the neutral position is opposite to the second joint (14b) of the release button (14) and wherein the release button (14) is provided with a locked surface (22) that in the locked position of the release button (14) avoids the pivoting of the compensator mass out of the neutral position through the coupling behind the free end of the second lever arm (16d) and that after an empty movement of the release button (14) towards the release position which is approximately equal to the predetermined distance (A) between the free end of the first lever arm (16c) and the first joint (14a) of the release button (14) frees the compensator mass, the predetermined position being considerably less than the displacement of the release button (14) between a locked position and the release position.
