A mailing machine base comprising, structure forfeeding a sheet having a leading edge and a trailing edge ina path of travel, the sheet feeding structure including aroller, the sheet feeding structure including structure fordriving the roller at a desired sheet feeding speedcorresponding to a desired reference voltage, structure forcontrolling the sheet feeding structure, the controllingstructure including a microprocessor connected to the rollerdriving structure, the controlling structure includingstructure for sequentially sensing the leading and trailingedges of the sheet in the path of travel and providingcorresponding successive signals to the microprocessor, thesheet having a predetermined length from the leading edge tothe trailing edge thereof: and the microprocessor programmedfor providing a predetermined reference voltagecorresponding to the desired sheet feeding speed, counting atime interval in response to receiving the successiveleading and trailing edge signals, determining whether thecounted time interval and the desired time interval aresubstantially equal, and storing the predetermined referencevoltage as the desired reference voltage if the counted anddesired time intervals are substantially equal.The mailing machine base may also comprise a postagemeter mounted on the base, the postage meter including arotary postage indicia printing drum, the base includingstructure for driving the drum at a desired constant indiciaprinting speed corresponding to a desired reference voltage,the base including structure for controlling the postageprinting drum, the controlling structure including amicroprocessor connected to the drum driving structure, thecontrolling structure including structure for sequentiallysensing a commencement and a completion of constant printingspeed of the drum and providing corresponding successivesignals to the microprocessor, the microprocessor programmedfor providing a predetermined reference voltagecorresponding to the desired drum printing speed, counting atime interval in response to receiving the successiveconstant speed commencement and completion signals,determining whether the counted time interval and thedesired time interval are substantially equal, and storingthe predetermined reference voltage as the desired referencevoltage if the counted and desired time intervals aresubstantially equal.
