2,2'-Bis-(quat. ammonio-methyl)-1,1'-binaphthyl salts of formula (I) are new: X = ÄNR1R2R3Ü+A-; R1 - R3 = 1-12C alkyl, opt. with O or N-R4 in the chain; R4 = 1-4C alkyl; or R2, R3 = 1-12C alkyl; and R1 = 4-8C cycloalkyl or R1+R1 = 2-6C alkylene; or NR1R2 = a 5-6-membered ring, opt. with O or N-R4 in the chain, and R3 = 1-12C alkyl; or NR1R2R3 = a bicyclic ring system with N as bridge-head atom and opt. with O atoms or N-R4 gps.; A = Cl, Br, or OSO3R5; R5 = 1-4C alkyl or aryl.
