Air bag inflator subassembly for installation onto the dashboard substrate of a motor vehicle

A motor vehicle air bag inflator assembly including an inflator (12) with an extruded body having a cylindrical outer surface (22) integrally formed with two apertured diametrically opposed flanges (18). Flat end plates(32, 36) are connected to opposed ends of the inflator body by bolts engaged in apertures formed in channels (42) formed integrally with the outer surface (22) of the inflator body. Inflator apertures (16) on one side of the flanges (18) direct gas into an air bag which is held in its folded state by a reinforced paper or woven polyamide retention cover. The inflator flanges (18) are bolted to upper or lower sides of complementary flanges of a dashboard substrate.
