Alkyl-2-acetamido-2-desoxy-D-glucopyranoside uronoic acid derivatives of formula (Ia) or (Ib) and their salts are new. R = 1-48C alkyl or 1-48C acyl. Also claimed is the use of compounds of formula (II) as surface active agents, especially as wash-active tensides or emulsifiers. R' = 1-48 (preferably 14-22, particularly 16-18)C alkyl.
