The diesel engine has a trough (18) in the piston crown, the bottom (24) of which runs divergently from the plane (26) of the crown top. The circular input aperture surface of the trough has a diameter at least 0.8 of that of the piston. There is a diffusor recess (27) at the edge of the trough which is co-axial with the trough. It rises from a transition sector (29) of the circumferential wall (25) at decreasing diameter towards the top of the crown, eliminating sharp edges in the regions of the combustion chamber not used in mixture formation.
