Prior to top coating steel sheet by dipping in a bath of molten zinc or aluminium alloy, the sheet is cleaned, annealed and given a first coating of at least one oxide 0.01-0.1 microns thick and a second coating of an alloy containing at least 20% iron. Also claimed are steel sheets respectively dip-coated with Fe-Zn alloy or Al based alloy on top of the first and second coatings.
