The present invention relates to an active vibration reduction apparatus and method for identifying a transfer function in an active vibration reduction apparatus. The identification signal, which is a quantized form of at least one sinusoidal wave, is supplied from the controller of the active vibration reduction apparatus to the controlled vibration source in synchronism with a predetermined output sampling clock SCo to generate the identification vibration therefrom. The controller reads the residual vibration signal from the residual vibration detector of the active reduction device in synchronism with the predetermined input sampling clock (SCi). After reading the residual vibration signal as time series data for each frequency, an FFT operation is performed on each time series data to extract the frequency component of the original sinusoidal wave. Thereafter, an inverse FFT operation is performed on the synthesis result of each extracted frequency component to derive an impulse response as a transfer function.
