An automotive clutch friction liner or frictional crown in the form of a flaked ring is prepared by impregnating rubber with rubber in a thermosetting resinous base mixture of various fillers dispersed in a mixture with rubber dissolved in a solvent. The field optionally comprises an inorganic fiber substrate reinforced with a metal, including organic fibers. After impregnation, the yarn is dried and then temporarily stored in the form of a coil in a barrel. Subsequently, the impregnated yard is recovered from the barrel and placed in a mold in which a workpiece in the form of a plate-like ring is molded by a wave method. The workpiece is then cured at elevated temperature under pressure and then trimmed to the appropriate size, with the formation of any recesses or holes for riveting.
