FIELD: coal-chemical industry. SUBSTANCE: invention relates to producing intermediate product to produce benzene from crude coal benzene where the latter is vaporized in stage 1 in evaporation column 2 to produce evaporation residue, while vaporized benzene reacts with hydrogen in pressure purification stage 3 connected with benzene evaporation stage 1 to form above-named intermediate product. According to invention, evaporation residue from evaporation stage 1 is tapped off and, in distillation stage 4, is separated into low- and high-boiling fractions, the latter being withdrawn as sump stream. Amount of tapped off evaporation residue is determined by concentration of polymerizing substances in crude coal benzene within the range 6 to 40% based on weight of raw material stream. Low-boiling fraction of evaporation residue withdrawn from distillation stage 4 is further condensed and fed into top part of evaporation column 2 as reflux stream. In distillation stage 4, double parameter gas pressure/temperature is established to indicate that sump stream is virtually free of aromatic hydrocarbons with less than 9 C atoms (excepting styrene). Corresponding installation is also provided. EFFECT: enhanced efficiency of process. 10 cl, 1 dwg
