Preparation of molybdenum (Mo) nitrides of formula (I) comprises thermolysis of organometallic Mo compounds (II) of formula (IIA) and/or (IIB) in an ammonia (NH3) and/or nitrogen (N2) atmosphere at 100-1100 deg C; in which x = 0.25-1.2; R1, R2, R3 = 1-10 carbon (C) alkyl, 2-10 C alkenyl, optionally substituted phenyl, 1-10 C alkoxy or an amino group -NR4R5; R4, R5 = hydrogen (H), 1-10 C alkyl or optionally substituted phenyl; X = halogen, phenoxy, -OSO2CF3 or a group of the formula;
