Melt container for secure destruction of plastic information carriers and destruction process

A melt container for destroying plastic information carriers has a slot(24) for inserting the carriers and an opening with a meltable securing bolt for removal of destroyed material. A process for destroying plastic information carriers involves preparing a melt container(10) with a securing bolt, inserting the information-carrying items and transporting to a melting oven(20) where the melted items form a cake for easy removal from the container. A subsequent brief heating period to a temperature above the melting point of the bolt material melts the already softened securing bolt to allow the container(10) to be opened. Preferably a lid covers the opening for removal of melted material on the upper side of the melt container (10) and a connection is provided at the insertion slot (24) for a gas extraction and filtering system (26). The securing bolt is located outside the inner chamber of the melt container (10) in a lip of the cover and separated by a seal from the inner chamber. Unauthorised removal of the securing bolt can be prevented by: (a) making the area of the cover around the bolt out of a thin or soft material with an even higher melting point than the bolt which becomes visually damaged when a large force is applied to the bo and (b) turning down a front edge of the cover parallel to the securing bolt to prevent gripping and pulling of the central part of the rivet-like securing bolt. An specific mark is embossed in the head of the bolt to allow precise identification.
