The method for increasing the SERS effect of an areal SERS active substrate, for use with the surface intensified Raman spectroscopy. The substrate before using, is exposed to a solution containing halide e.g. Cl-ions. The solution medium of the solution is water. The concentration of the halide in the solution is higher than the concentration of the halide in the medium, in which the substrate would be used. The substrate is immersed in the solution during a specified time. The substrate after the exposure to the halide containing solution is subjected to a drying process.
