Use is claimed of hexane-1,3,6-tricarboxylic acid (I) (or its ammonium or alkali metal salts) as a complex-former, (co) builder or incrustation inhibitor, the (I) or salt preferably being obtained by hydrolysis of the tricyano by-products obtained in either (a) the Sohio process for acrylonitrile production or (b) the electrohydrodimerisation of acrylonitrile.
