Mining roof cutter with geared lifting arrangement offers rapid, clean, in-situ maintenance and repairs

A new gearing arrangement is revealed, for a mining roof cutter with pick carrier, which is height-adjustable through a rack and worm drive. The advance concerns the worm gear assembly (22) which is constructed as a module. This can be inserted into and removed from the body (11) of the cutter unit. Preferably, the worm gear (22) assembly is arranged in a gear housing (28) inserted into a matching recess (34) in the body of the cutter unit. The gearing is essentially a worm wheel (21) following a reducing gear (25, 26). The latter comprises an externally-driven shaft, worm (26) and worm wheel (25).
