The method involves using a key, within a symmetrical technique, known only to the terminal and central station (Z) to encode uncoded data and to decode encoded data and which is defined on the subscriber side. The central station has a private (PR) and a public (PU) key pair. The public keys are known to each terminal and the private key is known only to the central station. One key is used to encode the data and the other to decode it. A terminal wishing to exchange encoded data with the central station first determines the central station's public key and its own key (KSi). The terminal key is encoded with the public key, transmitted to the central station and used for secure data communications.
