Separation of noncooled wire coils beyond tolerance limits from beginning and end of wire bundle being transported on stelmor installation

The method concerns separation of noncooled wire coils (30) from the beginning and end of a wire bundle (20) being transported on a stelmor installation (1), where the layer density between coils decreases from roller segment to roller segment with a stepwise increase of the transport speed. A predetermined number of coils at the beginning and end of a wire bundle is fed through at least two fall stages (6, 7) forming a unit within the region of the highest speed. By short-time acceleration after each stage (6, 7), these coils are further separated from one another. At the largest coil distance after the stage (7), one of the coils (30) is lifted and cut through. The coils thus separated are gripped and directed to a scrap collector. The apparatus includes a separation station (21) with a device (5) for lifting and cutting a coil, and a transport unit (8) for gripping and removing the separated coils.
