Press setting hot metal inserts, e.g. screw bushes into plastic with exceptional productivity

Here is a new press for insertion of metal components into plastic. It includes an electromagnetic heater (34) which raises the temperature of the metal insert (12) to be pressed into the plastic section (14). The insert is heated on a holding section (28) of the press mandrel (22). Invention focuses on the section of the mandrel (38) exposed to the electromagnetic field. This is novel in being made entirely or in part, of an electrically non-conducting material. Preferably the section of the mandrel exposed to the electromagnetic field is ceramic. The electromagnetic unit (34) is located in a casing (30), through which the mandrel moves axially. The cylinder (18) performs the pressing action between retracted and advanced positions where the insert is heated and pressed-in respectively. An auxiliary cylinder (40) connected to the main cylinder, has a piston rod entering the main cylinder, to define a third position, in which the insert is loaded. Both cylinders are pneumatic.
