The present invention concerns a method for producing a brake cam shaft (1) having at least one cam (4) for actuating a drum brake. To produce a brake cam shaft (1) which is simple to manufacture, light-weight, and still suitable for high torque transmission, a hollow cylindrical tube (2) is used as starting material. Successive axial forging processes produce material thicknesses (12) on said tube (2) as bearing seats and material thicknesses (14) at the end regions of the tube (2) for subsequent formation of the cam (4) and at least one indentation (6) with a tooth design (7). In a subsequent forging process using profiled forging hammers (15), the thickened end sections of the tube (2) are transformed in order to form a cam (4) and at least one indentation (6) with a tooth design (7).
