The frame (1) of the apparatus has openings (4) for pins of a knee restraint, a foot support and a slider (12) bringing pressure to bear on the instep. The slider is advanced by an electric motor (20) with a torque limiter (21) driving a threaded spindle (22). The stress on the limb is measured by a pressure transducer (16) on the tip (15) of the slider, and controlled by an electronic circuit responsive to the pressure signal. The movement is arrested when a predetermined or preselected degree of stress is attained.
