The system has one evaporator in the circuit with an air distribution fan for cooling the driver's cabin and a second cold storage evaporator and battery driven fan at the rear of the cabin selected by a control system and solenoid valves. A compressor (1) is driven by the vehicle engine through a magnetic coupling (2) and an air-cooled condenser (3,4) condenses high pressure refrigerant which is collected in reservoir (5). A thermostatic expansion valve (8) and evaporator assembly (10) complete the primary cooling circuit for the main cabin area. A second parallel cooling circuit (13) has a constant pressure expansion valve (14) and evaporator (15), situated in the sleeping section of the vehicle cabin, which has cold temperature storage properties. An air distribution fan and motor (17) are driven by a battery and operable when the vehicle engine is not functioning. A control unit (23) receives inputs from a variety of sources and regulates the operation of solenoid valves (21,22) and the evaporator fan motors as well as the compressor.
