A mechanical handling unit (1) transfers a pallet containing a load of glass products or a similar load on a plate (4) from a first position to a second position by a translatory and/or rotary horizontal motion. The system further incorporates a vertically-operating jack (3). The plate rests on lifting arms or suction pads. The lifting jack consists of a motor-powered wide belt unit (6) operating parallel to the main direction of movement, and has a rigid stabilisation system which is orthogonal to the main direction of movement. The belts are fixed to the sides of the lifting plate.
