A piezoelectric single crystal is disclosed, which has a large electromechanical coupling coefficient and causes virtually no depolarisation owing to the effect of heat in e.g. the steps of fabricating an ultrasonic transceiver element. The piezoelectric single crystal essentially satisfies the general formula: Pb{[M11/3Nb(2/3)-(2z/3)Ta2z/3]1-x-yTixM2y}O3 in which M1 represents at least one metal selected from Zn, Ni and Mg, M2 represents at least one metal selected from Pt, Fe, Bi, Rh and Ir, and x, y and z are defined as 0.05 /= x /= 0.2, 0.00001 /= y /= 0.01 and 0 /= z /= 0.1.
