A sampling device reads out data from the recording medium. A structure recognition device recognises the servo track of the medium. A Gray code window generator (40) generates a Gray code synchronising window signal, and subsequent-signal and data gating signal corresponding to the first and second (36,38) information data signals. A Gray code data extractor (34) passes a sync. signal to the window signal generator according to successive Gray code window signals corresponding to the first and second sets of information data, and a Gray code to binary converter (22) delivers a binary code from the data gating signal.
