The method quickly determines the position of an object by calculating the coordinates of the centre of gravity of the overall image and the coordinates of the centres of gravity of, for example, quadrants converging in the centre of gravity of the overall image and containing the silhouette, on the basis of silhouette of the object. These coordinates are compared with desired values in order to change subsequently the orientation of the sensor with respect to the object so that the difference between the coordinates to be calculated and the desired coordinates is minimised.
