A method for the industrial production of carbon - mesophase and microspheres containing carbon bodies produced therefrom

A starting material which may be a heavy petroleum residue or coal tar is subjected to heat treatment and a solid product with a high anisotropic content mainly in the form of spheres is obtained. This solid product is then treated with an aromatic solvent to extract the carbon-containing mesophase microspheres (MMC) which are insoluble in the solvent used. The material obtained, carbon-containing mesophase microspheres, has a wide range of industrial uses, either directly or following subsequent pressing and calcination treatment to produce special carbon materials.
