The road surface is made from a number of layers, of which a base layer (5) incorporates pieces of rubber measuring between 1 cm and 30 cm in size and rich in metal fibres obtained from used motor vehicle tyres. The rubber pieces are roughly flat in shape and measure between 5 and 15 cm long and 1 and 5 cm wide, and the thickness of the base layer containing them is between 3 and 30 cm and preferably 5-15 cm. The rubber pieces are from two groups, one of large pieces and the other of small pieces, with the proportion of large to small pieces being about 80% to 20%.
